Guidelines: Posting to Reddit
Before posting to Reddit, review and follow these simple guidelines for your linked accounts and scheduled posts.
Following these guidelines will ensure that your content performs as well as it can and you don’t violate any of Reddit’s rules.
Violating Reddit’s rules or posting too frequently may result in negative consequences such as account and subreddit suspensions. Fortunately, this risk can be almost eliminated by following the guidelines. Take a cautious, proactive approach when promoting your content on Reddit.
Account Guidelines
Use Established Accounts
Reddit’s spam filters are stricter on new accounts and accounts that have the usage patterns of a typical user.
For this reason, we recommend that you don’t use brand-new Reddit accounts with PostDaddy. Instead, use an established account.
PostDaddy defines established as:
- An account that is at least one month old
- One month is the absolute minimum recommendation, older is better
- An account with an organic comment/reply history
- Organic posting history is also positive, but not as important since most Reddit users don’t post regularly
- An account with a Reddit karma score greater than 50
- 50 is the absolute minimum recommendation, higher is better
If your account isn’t established, take some time to build your account’s reputation. A quick way to build a comment history and get karma is to comment on posts and reply to users on posts in the top communities on Reddit.
Engage with Your Audience
Reddit is a community-driven website, so you’ll have more success promoting yourself if you engage with your audience on the posts that you schedule.
As a bonus, positive replies to your audience will add to your comment history and increase karma, which improves your account’s credibility over time.
Use this positive feedback loop to your advantage!
Verify Your Account Where Necessary
Some subreddits, usually adult-oriented ones, require you to verify your account with the moderators to ensure that you’re not impersonating someone else.
Each subreddit has its own process for account verification. Read the rules and apply for verification before scheduling posts to these subreddits.
Posting Guidelines
Follow the Reddit Content Policy
Ensure that the content that you’re posting is allowed by the Reddit.com Content Policy.
Follow Subreddit Rules
Moderators of each subreddit create rules for their communities. These include but are not limited to:
- The types of posts (ie: text, link, media) that may be submitted
- Post title, body, content, and flair requirements for posts
- The nature of posts that are allowed or not allowed
- Rules surrounding advertising and self-promotion
- Whether your account must be verified with moderators before posting
Before posting to a new subreddit, review the rules before scheduling a post to ensure that your post abides by the community rules. Posts that don’t follow the rules may be deleted by moderators, and your account may be banned from posting to that subreddit again.
Post Conservatively
The frequency at which you can post without being flagged for spam depends on how established your account is. For simplicity, here’s a basic set of guidelines.
- If your account is established, don’t post more than once every:
- Low Risk: 1 hour
- Medium Risk: 30 minutes
- High Risk: 15 minutes
- If your account is not established, don’t post more than once every:
- Low Risk: 2 hours
- Medium Risk: 1 hour
- High Risk: 30 minutes
- For any account, regardless of it’s credibility:
- Never submit more than one post in the same timeslot
- Never submit a post to the same subreddit within 24 hours
Very well-established accounts may be able to post even more frequently with no issues at all, but be cautious since account suspensions can take a few days to resolve.
The uniqueness of the content you’re posting also impacts the risk level. PostDaddy recommends posting content in a staggered fashion instead of scheduling a bunch of posts with the same content one after another.
If you don’t have a lot of different content to post, we recommend a more conservative spacing of your posts to reduce the chances your content is flagged as spam.
Aim for High Quality
Ensure that your post titles are clear and make sense for the destination subreddit. Titles cannot be modified once a post is submitted, so take the time to get your titles right.
Never re-use post titles, even between subreddits, since this looks like spam.
Always ensure that you’re posting the highest quality content possible, whether you’re posting text, an image, or a video.
For media, ensure that the files you upload are not heavily compressed, since they may be compressed further by Reddit or RedGIFs.
Increasing the quality of your posts prevents them from being marked as spam and also improves the image of whatever you’re promoting. Another win-win.
Avoid Direct Marketing on Subreddits
Direct marketing, advertising, and self-promotion are not violations of the Reddit Content Policy, but they are against the rules of most subreddits. Even if your promotion doesn’t violate a subreddit’s rules, users will downvote your post if your promotion is too blatant.
Use indirect marketing when possible.
For example, if you’re attempting to market a software product, you may want to share a well-written out blog post on a subject of interest that includes a subtle plug for your product.
If you’re using PostDaddy for adult marketing, your posts serve as a funnel to your user page. No need for direct promotion.
Regardless of what you’re promoting, take advantage of your user page for direct marketing. You can post whatever you want there as long as it follows the Reddit Content Policy.
Classify Your Media Correctly
When you upload media to PostDaddy via the Content Manager, make sure you classify the nature of your content (ie: SFW, non-adult NSFW, adult NSFW) correctly.
This is crucial because PostDaddy uses this classification to determine your content’s upload location in situations when content cannot be uploaded directly to Reddit.
See our reference on media uploads for Reddit posts for more information.
Don’t Post Spam
If you’ve followed the guidelines above, your content should not be considered spam, and this isn’t an issue. However, it’s worth mentioning explicitly.
Spamming is against the Reddit Content Policy and the PostDaddy Terms of Service. Don’t post spam posts to Reddit with PostDaddy.
