Posting to Subreddits That Require Verification
Some subreddits require that your account be verified with the subreddit’s moderators to post. This is usually to prevent impersonation or exploitation in sensitive situations (ie: usually when posting NSFW content).
How do I know if a subreddit requires verification?
PostDaddy is currently building automated tools to make it easier to determine which subreddits require verificiation. Until then, visit each subreddit and read the rules to check if your account must be verified to post.
You can also look for the Restricted label which sometimes appears in a subreddit’s sidebar. However, some subreddits require verification but are not listed as Restricted, so a subreddit’s rules are the best source of truth for posting requirements.
How do I verify my account?
Each subreddit has its own rules for verifying your account with the moderators. These usually include sending a DM or ModMail message to moderators with a photo of yourself containing some type of verification information including the account name, subreddit name, and/or date.
Verifications are manually reviewed by moderators, so each verification may take a few days.
What happens if I post without verifying?
If a subreddit is classified as Restricted, and you attempt to post with an unverified account, your post submission will fail with the following error message:
User <account> is not allowed to post to subreddit r/<subreddit>; it may be restricted or private
Fortunately, since the post is not submitted to Reddit, there are no potential consequences for your account when you encounter this error message.
If a subreddit is not classified as Restricted, but still requires verification, your post will be submitted, but it may be manually removed by moderators or automatically removed via AutoModerator.
Additionally, moderators may ban your account from the subreddit for failing to verify before posting. This may be reversed by reaching out to the moderators in good faith, but be cautious when posting to new subreddits, especially NSFW ones.
Keeping Your Account Safe
Even if your account has been verified, ensure that your posts follow the rules for each subreddit or they may be removed and your account may be banned from the subreddit.
Also, ensure that you’re always following PostDaddy’s Reddit Posting Guidelines to ensure account safety and the best chances for success.
Finally, note that even if you’ve been approved to post in a restricted subreddit, you may need to include a specific flair on your posts so that your content is not automatically removed by AutoModerator or manually removed by moderators. Refer to the rules for each subreddit any flair requirements.
